The end of Summer is here. Labor day has come and gone and now it’s time to start looking for project pigs again. We visited a few of the fairs last season to get a better idea of how things are done and I must say that I was amazed at how much time and effort some of the kids put into their project pigs. Many of them had a hard time selling the pig and it makes you feel good,(in a weird sorta way) to know that they cared for those animals the best they could.
The Little Pig Farm has been getting lots of e-mails and phone calls lately as preparations for this years fairs become a necessity. I have noticed that the fairs are a little later in most of our surrounding counties which will be good for us, since we had a couple sows that did not come through. We will only have two litters born in time to make the fair this year. Here is a list of Florida Fairs but you will need to contact your local FFA or 4-H group to find out the specifics for your county.
The Florida 4-H website has great swine manual available for download or just to read online. It’s worth a look. Get it here
We will have baby pigs on September 16 and Oct 5 but they wont be available for 8-10 weeks after farrowing. We’ll have pictures up soon after they farrow. Looking forward to a great fair season and if you have any questions, send us an e-mail
Good Luck and happy Piging
