This is not what we expected when we started our little pig farm. Little pigs are way too cute to pass up though.
Potbellied pigs, standard sized, teacup, micro-mini, etc… whatever you want to call them, have become pretty popular it seems. We have done a lot of research and have found that tons of people have them in their house as pets. We could not imagine having one of our feeder pigs in the house, since our sows average about 500 lbs and our boar about 600lbs. We wouldn’t want to come home and see that sitting on my sofa.
The breeder we found was forced to remove the babies at 2 weeks old and hand feed them because the mother had killed a couple by laying on them. We were worried that Phebe wouldn’t be healthy because she wasn’t able to nurse for the first six to eight weeks of her life but that wasn’t the case at all. She is doing just fine now, but it has been a lot of work. Mixing up “Unimilk” with baby cereal to make sure that she got all of the protein she needed to grow and making her sleeping bags to keep her warm since she didn’t have mom to snuggle up to. It has been an experience, that’s for sure, but a fun one.
We have constructed an e-book that can keep all this important information together, so if anyone wants to learn more it is available here.
We have put countless hours into research so you won’t have to.
Also, we have started a site for all the gear that you will need and want for your new pot bellied friend at www.piggear.com . Brenda will be hand sewing most of the products found on the site.
